Using between 36 and 42 hoops, former World Champion Hoop Dancer
Eddie Swimmer, has captivated
audiences all over the world with his performances.
His
heritage is from both the Eastern Band of Cherokee in North
Carolina, and the Chippewa-Cree Nation. He was raised, and
currently
resides in the Big Cove Community
of the Qualla Boundary (reservation in NC).
Eddie
learned dancing from his family and by watching traditional Cherokee
dancers.
After attending Western Carolina University and Brigham
Young University, he moved to Albuquerque New
Mexico, and
studied with Tony Whitecloud, founder of the modern
Native American Hoop dance.
He
is
founder of the
dance troupe
NATIVE MOVEMENTS.
Eddie
was one of the
original members of
the
AMERICAN INDIAN DANCE THEATRE in
New York, as well as a member
of the SANTE FE MUSIC HALL in New Mexico.
Eddie's
talents extended to Broadway, as choreographer of the hoop
dance
for the popular musical ANNIE GET YOUR GUN, that
starred Bernadette Peters and Tom Wopat.
He has performed on Public Television, and throughout the world, in
countries such as Italy, Israel, Finland, parts of the Middle East,
Eastern and Western Europe, Japan and Australia.
Eddie performed in the 1993 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York
City, then in 1994, at the World Cup Soccer Tournament in Dallas Texas.
